STORRS, Conn. - Tiffany Hayes scored 20 points and dished out a season-high seven assists as the No. 1 University of Connecticut women's basketball team downed LSU 81-51 on Sunday afternoon in the Huskies' final game of the World Vision Challenge in Storrs, Conn.
Hayes and senior Maya Moore combined for 46 of UConn's 81 points as Moore registered her 42nd career double-double as she shot 11-of-18 from the field for 26 points, while she pulled down 12 rebounds. With her 12 boards, Moore has now grabbed 1,009 career rebounds to become the fourth player in the history of the program to record over 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds in her career, joining Tina Charles, Rebecca Lobo and Jamelle Elliot on that list.
With the victory UConn improves to 6-0 on the year, while the Huskies' extend their win streak to 84 games. LSU evens its record to 4-4 on the year with the 30-point loss.
UConn began the afternoon shooting 1-of-6 from the floor in the first three minutes as LSU opened the game with a 7-3 run, including a 5-0 spurt in the first minute of the contest. UConn trailed for 4:55 in the first half until a tip-in by Moore put the Huskies ahead for good. UConn has now trailed for a total 132:08 of a possible 3,360 minutes during its current win streak.
The Huskies' charged back after the opening three minutes with their own 7-0 run, led by five points from Moore. After giving up a three-point play and a deep three pointer to LSU, the Huskies rebounded with a 12-0 run in a span of 3:47 to take a 29-15 lead at the 8:58 mark in the first half. At intermission, UConn led by 10 at 46-36.
UConn opened the second half with a 12-2 run in the first 3:40 of the frame as Stefanie Dolson netted five of her 11 points during that time span. The Huskies' largest lead of the game came at the 3:56 mark in the second half as UConn took a 33-point advantage on a Moore jumper inside the paint to make the score 79-46.
Freshman Bria Hartley registered her fourth straight game in double figures as she finished the afternoon with 15 points, while adding five assists and three steals. Samarie Walker grabbed nine boards and scored five points off the bench for the Huskies as UConn shot 42.4-percent from the floor on 28-of-66 shooting.
UConn held LSU to 15 points in the second half, marking the third straight contest the Huskies have held their opponent to 19 points or less in the final frame. LSU finished the day shooting 19-of-53 from the floor, including an 8-of-20 clip from behind the arc. UConn out rebounded the Lady Tigers 46-28.
Today's win marked the sixth all-time victory for the Huskies over LSU as UConn holds a 6-1 series record over the Lady Tigers.
UConn will hit the road to take on South Florida on Thursday, Dec. 2 in Tampa, Fla. The BIG EAST Conference opener will be televised live on CPTV at 7:00 p.m.
