UConn Player and Coach Quotes
Maya Moore - Sr., F
On the fans' reaction when she broke the scoring record:
"It just makes me appreciate playing at UConn even more. The amount of fans we have, as loud as it gets in there, that just makes you appreciate things here. I give the fans credit. I think in the stats, they should get one of my assists. When they were cheering so loud, I was able to find Tiffany down low in the post. That was really fun."
On what it mean's personally to break the record:
"The only thing I can really say I've thought about as far as the record goes is being appreciative of how much I've been able to play while I've been here. Knowing that you need an opportunity to play if you want any chance at any sort of record. I'm just happy that I was able to come in and get a lot of minutes as a freshman. Then to be able to start the rest of my years here. All of that builds up to the amount of points I've put up."
On relationship with former record holder Tina Charles:
"We haven't talked too much about the record. (Associate Coach) Chris Dailey told me that Tina contacted her to tell me that I'm allowed to score but I can't get any more rebounds this year. I'm trying to get as many rebounds as I can though. I don't think I'm averaging as many rebounds as I should this year."
Tiffany Hayes - Jr., G
On where her confidence is at this point of the season:
"I had a better game today than I had my past couple of games. With the help of my coaches sticking with me and my teammates always helping me, telling me to keep shooting, I'm getting better. All of that during practice and getting lots of shots after practice is helping. I can definitely do more in every aspect of my game. I can get more rebounds. I can find open players out there. You can always get better. I'm never satisfied with where I'm at."
On Kelly Farris:
"Oh man, Kelly - She's like a spurt of energy that is always there. She brings it every time. When we need a big rebound - I think she had 10 today - that's what she does. It gives us more possessions on offense. It stops the other team from scoring. I'm so glad we have her on the team. We definitely need that boost at times."
UConn Head Coach Geno Auriemma Quotes
On Maya Moore breaking the all-time scoring record:
"There are really no thoughts on that other than once you get to a certain point, as long as she stays healthy and keeps going as she's going, it's inevitably going to happen. To just be in a position to do that is pretty incredible. When you think about how many players have played here and how hard it is to score that many points, and it's not like they are playing 30-35 minutes every night, it makes it more meaningful, because it was done with a limited amount of minutes and was done in the context of helping the team win, as opposed to scoring a lot of points and then wishing your team had won more championships. I think it's the best of both worlds if you're a kid, and she has definitely been able to do that. I hope she doesn't stop here."
On how the crowd reacted to her breaking the record:
"The mystery was all gone going into the game, and she kind of took care of it early on in her first three or four shots, and that was it. It (the crowd) was pretty good for a Sunday afternoon against an opponent that I'm sure everyone knew what the outcome of the score was going to be, and I'm sure a lot of that had to do with what Maya was going to do. I thought the people were very good to her, like you knew they would be."
On the offensive stretch in the first half where the team went 20-of-25 from the field:
"There's a tendency sometimes to want to score quickly so you pass once or twice and then somebody takes whatever shot they feel like taking. I thought today the ball moved really, really well. When that happens, you get the type of shots that generally go in because they are wide open and are ready to shoot. You hope for games like this where you get that kind of ball movement and people movement. I don't think we ever gave Sacred Heart a chance to get their defense set either. It just happened so quickly on them. They've had some interesting games this year and I don't know that they ever had a chance to find us. Things were happening really quickly and that's kind of how you like the game to go."
On having Stefanie Dolson and Heather Buck on the floor together:
"It's hard to evaluate that, because the kids that we're playing against don't present that much of a challenge inside. From a defensive standpoint I think it was good, because they had to get out on the perimeter and play, move their feet, do all the stuff that I think will help them down the road. It's just another experiment by us to see how far we can go with certain things. We're limited as to who we can have out there with who so it was good for us to get that look. We'll see what happens when we play against a bigger team and see how they do."
Sacred Heart Head Coach Ed Swanson
Coach Ed Swanson on his team's performance:
"We didn't play well. We knew what we were up against, but we didn't play well. I think it had a lot to do with nerves, nervous energy and excitement. I just wish we played a little bit better. Our defense should have been one step behind UConn's defense, but we were 2 ½ behind. I'm proud of my kids… I'm not disappointed for taking the opportunity to come up here to play, I thought we saw some good things that hopefully will come back to help us in our conference."
On his overall thoughts on Maya:
"I saw her play in AAU as well and just the improvement from AAU basketball…and how hard she plays in every way. She's like the Kobe Bryant of Women's Basketball I think. She's going to do the same thing on the next level.
On what UConn does defensively: I
knew that losing Doty was a big hit, but just watching film of them the energy that they play with on defense, they push you out on everything, they're physical.
