Morgan & Flowers Earn Northeast Region Honors

STORRS, Conn. - For the fourth straight year, University of Connecticut women's track and field head coach Bill Morgan has been named the NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field Northeast Women's Head Coach of the Year. Sophomore Victoria Flowers also earned honors this indoor season as she was named the 2010 NCAA Division I Northeast Women's Field Athlete of the Year.
"In any individual honor that I receive, I must recognize the significance of my staff," said Morgan. "My right-hand man, Clive Terrelonge's efforts with the sprint/hurdle group and Andrea Grove-McDonough's work with establishing a significant presence with the middle distance group has been tremendous.
"It's also very satisfying when your peers acknowledge the body of work we have put together, which is very meaningful to my program and this great group that we have brought together."
Morgan, who has led the Huskies to one of their most successful seasons in program history, helped guide his program to a third place finish at the 2010 BIG EAST Indoor Championship as well as a first place finish at both the New England and ECAC Championships.
With their third place finish at the conference championship, the Huskies have now earned a top-three placing in the past four consecutive years, including back-to-back titles in 2008 and 2009.
Morgan has also helped All-Americans Carin Knight and Flowers succeed throughout their careers, as Flowers earns the Northeast honor for the first time of her career.
As a sophomore, Flowers won the New Balance Intercollegiate Invitational in the weight throw in a new personal best of 66-6½ (20.28m), ranking her twelfth in the NCAA in the event and first in the Northeast Region. She also won this year's New England and ECAC titles in the weight throw.
Flowers was the only freshman in 2009 to compete in the weight throw at the NCAA Championship and earned All-America status in her first year. This season, she is one of three sophomores out of the 17 individuals competing. Morgan will send four athletes to the Division I Indoor Track and Field National Championship this weekend as Flowers and Knight are joined by Trisha-Ann Hawthorne and Phylicia George.
Heading into the NCAA Indoor Championships, the 2010 indoor season has already produced ten conference champions and eight plus school records for the Huskies.
