STORRS, Conn. - In its home opener, the University of Connecticut softball team dropped two games to Georgetown falling 6-4 in game one and 8-5 in game two, Saturday.
Amy Vaughan (Somerset, Mass.) and Amy DeLuca (Bordentown, N.J.) each went 4-for-7 on the day for the Huskies with one homerun. Vaughan also tallied two doubles on the day.
The Huskies drop to 7-16 on the year and 0-2 in BIG EAST play as Georgetown improves to 10-15 in 2010 and 2-0 in the BIG EAST.
In game one, the Huskies got on the board first, in the bottom of the first, after back-to-back doubles by Brittany Duclos (Mystic, Conn.) and DeLuca.
The Hoyas evened things out in the top of the third inning when MacKensey Carter ripped a triple to deep centerfield scoring McKinley Cooper. Georgetown went ahead in the top of the sixth, putting together a three run inning that began with a bloop hit just over the first baseman Justyne Roy (North Dighton, Mass.) that scored two. A single up the middle extended Georgetown's lead to three with just an inning and a half to play.
In the bottom half of the frame, the Huskies responded as Vaughan tied things up with one crack of the bat, blasting a three-run shot to left centerfield. DeLuca started things off with a single to left field and moved to second on a single to short stop by Roy. One batter later, Vaughan tied things up at four heading into the final inning of play.
The Hoyas didn't wait long to break the tie as their leadoff batter, Samantha Peters, chipped a home run just over the left field wall for the game-winning run. They added an insurance run later on in the inning and the Huskies were set down in order in the bottom of the seventh as the Hoyas held on for a 6-4 victory.
In game two, the Hoyas were the first to get on the board when they put up three runs in the top of the fourth inning. Starting pitcher Tricia Sullivan (New Bedford, Mass.) walked in the first run of the game before being replaced by Ali Adelman (San Diego, Calif.). Adelman allowed two more runs across in the inning for the 3-0 Hoya advantage.
The Huskies began to chip away at Georgetown's lead scoring a run in three-consecutive innings. In the bottom of the inning, DeLuca hammered a homerun to left centerfield to get the Huskies on the board. In the bottom of the fifth, Jen Ward (Waterford, Conn.) started things off for the Huskies with a bunt single that hugged the third baseline. Towers moved her up a base on a line drive to centerfield and Ward advanced to third on a single to left field by DeLuca. During Vaughan's at bat, Ward crossed the plate on a wild pitch to bring Georgetown's lead to one.
In the sixth, UConn used a couple of wild pitches to even things out at three-all. Marissa Guches (Sammamish, Wash.) started things off with a rip through the left side moving up to second base where she was replaced on the basepath by Kim Silva (Cheshire, Conn.). Silva moved up to third on a wild pitch, scoring just one pitch later, on the Hoya's third wild pitch of the game to tie things at three.
Georgetown rallied in the top of the seventh scoring five runs. The Huskies formed a rally of their own firing off three-straight hits to cut the lead to just three, but UConn couldn't get any closer finishing with a 8-5 loss.
Kiki Saveriano (Lexington, Mass.) was the game one starter for the Huskies, also coming into game two in relief. She finished the day with seven innings pitched, seven earned runs allowed and seven strikeouts.
The Huskies are back in action on Sunday, March 28 at the Connecticut Softball Stadium where they will close out their season series with the Hoyas at 11:00 a.m.
