STORRS, Conn. - Mike Nemeth hit a two-run home run to lift the UConn baseball team over Manhattan 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon at J.O. Christian Field.
UConn (39-10) entered the bottom of the seventh inning down 3-2 before a single by George Springer scored John Andreoli from third to tie the game at three. Nemeth followed Springer with a blast over the right field wall to put the Huskies in the lead. It was the 10th home run this season hit by the junior first baseman.
With the win, the Huskies tie the program's highest win tally in a single season of 39, which they set in 2006.
The Huskies held a 5-3 advantage heading into the top of the ninth and despite the bases loaded with two outs, Kevin Vance was able to pitch out of a jam to earn his seventh save of the year. Scott Oberg, who took the hill in the seventh, retired all six batters he faced as he improves to 5-0 on the year with the win.
Pat Butler threw six innings, allowing five hits and three earned runs, while striking out five. Manhattan's Mike Giordano took the loss in today's contest to drop to 5-3 on the year as he allowed six hits, five runs and three earned runs in 6.2 innings of work.
UConn took a 2-0 lead after the first two innings led by the offense of Pierre LePage. LePage crossed the plate for the Huskies in the first, scoring on Manhattan's first of four errors in today's ballgame. In the second inning, John Andreoli scored on a LePage single to left field. For the junior second baseman, it was his 44th RBI of the year.
Manhattan scored one run in the fourth and two in the fifth to take a 3-2 lead, led by home runs from both Mike McCann and Anthony Armenio.
UConn put together a three-run seventh inning to take over the lead led by Nemeth's 10th blast of the year and team-leading 76th hit of the season. Nemeth finished the game 2-for-3 with one run, two RBI and 10 putouts. LePage went 2-for-5 with one run and one RBI. In addition, the Huskies stole five bases in today's contest.
UConn returns to action on Friday as the Huskies travel to South Florida to take on the Bulls in a three-game BIG EAST series. Game time for Friday night is set for 7:00 p.m.
