Over the next month, five current or former University of Connecticut women's track athletes will participate in the national track and field championships of three different countries. Emma Crowcroft, Phylicia George, Trisha-Ann Hawthorne, Carin Knight, and Deirdre Mullen have all qualified for the elite summer meets.
Crowcroft, Knight and Mullen will participate in the USATF Championship on the campus of Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa on June 24 and 25.
Crowcroft, who is coming off of her freshman campaign at UConn, will take part in the junior women's javelin on Friday, June 25 at 10 a.m. Crowcroft recently participated in the NCAA Championships, her first, in the javelin taking 16th place with a throw of 46.49 meters (152-6). She was the top-freshman performer in the javelin at the meet.
"Emma comes to this venue in the under-20 Junior Championships where she is in position to qualify for the USA Junior Team," said Head Coach Bill Morgan. "Emma has moved from a virtual novice to a more confidant and national level athlete. It will be interesting to see how she responds. My initial thoughts are that she is very capable of throwing big. This will only contribute to her growth in coming years. It will all be positive."
Knight and Mullen will be participating in the women's high jump on Saturday, June 26 at 12:30 p.m. Knight, a three-time All-American for UConn is coming off of back-to-back BIG EAST Championships during the outdoor season where she set a meet record tying her personal best of 1.84 meters (6-0.5). Mullen, a five-time All-American for the Huskies, will be running for Nike at the meet. She comes into the meet ranked fourth overall among the competitors.
"Carin enters the championship as one of the most successful athletes in program history," continued Morgan. "As a three-time All-American she concludes her career at these USA Championships along with former five-time All-American and NIKE team member Deirdre Mullen. Carin has elevated her position in our program with no only substantial championships and memorable victories but with meaningful leadership. This will be a springboard in continuing her athletic career.
Hawthorne will be running at the Jamaican National meet, on June 26 and 27 in Kingston, Jamaica. Hawthorne, the Huskies first ever All-American in the track events, will compete in both the 100-meter and 200-meter at the meet. Hawthorne earned her All-American title in the 100-meter dash with a seventh place, 11.39 second finish at the 2010 NCAA Championship in Eugene, Ore.
"I am looking forward to seeing Hawthorne run in a competitive environment against the world leader in the 100-meter and 200-meter," said Associate Head Coach Clive Terralonge. "She has a chance to make the Jamaican National under-23 Team that will compete in the NACAC on July 9th -11th, in Miramar, Florida. Competing well in this Championship should give her tremendous confident to make the senior National Team next summer for the 13th IAAF World Athletics Outdoor Championships in Daegu, Korea." The 100-meter semifinals and finals will take place on Saturday, June 26 at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. respectively. The 200-meter races will take part on Sunday, June 27. The semifinals will begin at 3 p.m. and Hawthorne's meet will hopefully conclude with the 200-meter finals at 5:10 p.m.
The meet will also mark the return of Terralonge to the Jamaica National Championship since he stopped competing for the country over 10 years ago.
"I am very excited about go to Jamaica for the National Championships," said Terralonge. "It is great honor for me to take my first athlete, All American Trisha-Ann Hawthorne to our National Championships as a coach."
At the end of July, George will be the final Husky to compete in her country's National Championships. The Canadian will take part in the 100-meter hurdles and 100-meter dash at the National Championships in Toronto, Ontario from July 28-31.
George broke the UConn 100-meter record at the BIG EAST Championship with a third place finish in the preliminaries with a time of 13.39 seconds. Her second place performance in the ECAC Championship also helped the Huskies capture their third-straight title and she was a part of the 4x100 meter relay team that won the ECAC Championship and advanced all the way to the NCAA Championship in Eugene where they finished with a 15th place showing and time of 44.89 seconds.
Phylicia's goal for this National Championship is to run a personal best in the 100 meter hurdles," said Terralonge. "If she can accomplish that she will make the National Team that will compete in the Commonwealth Games on October 3-14th in New Delhi, India. I have the at-most confident in her to get this done because her training as been going very going well, since the NCAA Championships a few weeks ago. She will also have the opportunity to compete in a few meets to get sharp before the Canadian Championships."
