Men's Soccer Defeats BU 1-0 in Final Exhibition

STORRS, Conn. - Alan Ponce scored the game-winning goal on a penalty kick in the 81st minute to give No. 10/22 UConn a 1-0 victory over Boston University in front of a crowd of 4,562 in the Huskies' final exhibition match of the 2010 preseason.
The Huskies open the regular season on Wednesday, Sept. 1 with a non-conference match-up against St. Francis (N.Y.). The season-opener is set for a 7:30 p.m. start at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium.
On the night, UConn outshot the Terriers 11-5, including a 7-3 clip in the second half. Josh Ford made three saves in net for UConn as he did not allow a goal in 90 minutes played. Boston University's Brandon Briggs played 60:48 in net for the Terriers and made three saves without allowing a goal. Trevor McManamon took over in net for the Terriers for the final 29:12 and surrendered the lone goal of the night.
UConn's first shot of the night came in the 10th minute as senior Robert Brickley connected on a header in front of the goal box off of a Carlos Alvarez free kick. Brickley's attempt was grabbed by a leaping Briggs for the Terrier's first save of the match.
Six minutes later, Tony Cascio broke free from a defender and drilled a shot at net but missed wide left of his target. Max Wasserman also got in on the action as he recorded one shot in the half. Senior Shawn Nicklaw dribbled down the middle of the field and passed off to his right where Wasserman connected on his shot, missing wide right.
After a handball was called in the 18-yard box in the 81st minute, UConn received a penalty kick as Ponce drilled the ball straight in past a diving McManamon to put the Huskies ahead 1-0.
Diop, Brickley and freshman Mamadou Doudou Diouf finished the contest with two shots each for the Huskies.
After the 90-minute regulation contest, a 30-minute period of extra time was played. During this time, UConn won 1-0 as Juho Karppinen scored the Huskies' lone goal. Matt Sangeloty played all 30 minutes for the Huskies and did not face a shot on net.
