BOSTON, Mass. - A third set University of Connecticut rally fell just short, as the Huskies dropped a three-set decision at Northeastern this evening. UConn is now 2-5 on the year while Northeastern improves to 7-4.
Set scores were 22-25, 15-25, 23-25.
After a back and forth first set, UConn opened set two with a 5-1 lead off of kills from Jordan Kirk (Plano, Texas) and Morgan Freeman (Virginia Beach, Va.) and a Mattison Quayle (Los Angeles, Calif.) service ace. Northeastern was able to go on a four-point run to even the score at 5-5, before taking the lead for the rest of the set at 8-7, ending with three straight points to take the 25-15 set win.
The third set proved to be the best for both teams as Northeastern and UConn would tie the set six times during the final seven points.
After taking a 2-1 lead to begin the third set, UConn was able to hold that lead until Northeastern forced the third tie of the set at 16-16 on a UConn error. The largest Connecticut lead during that span was four points (13-9), set up by kills from Freeman, Kirk and Allison Nickel (Pittsford, N.Y.).
Northeastern took just their second lead of the set at 18-16 but UConn quickly responded with points off of a Quayle kill and Freeman ace to even the score at 18-18, before Angela Roidt (McFarland, Wis.) posted her second kill as a Husky to give UConn the one-point advantage (19-18).
UConn and Northeastern traded points for the next eight plays, Connecticut capitalizing on kills from Quayle and Rebecca Murray (Carmel, Ind.), before Northeastern was able to put away the match with a kill and service ace.
The match marked the first of the season for Roidt as she started her Husky career with a match-high 25 assists, eight digs and a pair of kills.
Freeman led the Husky offense with a match-high nine kills, while Kirk added eight and Murray posted five.
Murray also had a match-high 12 digs, along with a service ace and block assist.
The Huskies will return to action this weekend with the Colgate Invitational. UConn will travel to Hamilton, N.Y. to face Cornell at 3:30 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 17), host Colgate at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday (Sept. 18) and Akron at 7:00 p.m. also on Saturday.
