FLORENCE - The University of Connecticut women's basketball team got up this morning, ate breakfast and boarded a bus to Pisa, site of the iconic Leaning Tower of Pisa and other magnificent medieval structures.
The team entered the Square of Miracles, where one is immediately impressed by the Tower, the Cathedral, the Cemetery and the Baptistery. The Tower, Cathedral and Baptistery are all exactly 179 feet high.
The Huskies snapped some pictures and then enjoyed a brief history of Pisa from an outstanding tour guide while waiting to climb the Tower's 294 steps.
The Tower leans approximately 13.5 feet, while the Baptistery and the Cathedral both lean approximately three feet off center. This unnerving characteristic is due to the unusually soft soil of Pisa.
Connecticut will be back in action tomorrow. The team will depart Florence for Como tomorrow morning and will take on the Nigerian National Team at 7 p.m.
