STORRS, Conn. - Two former University of Connecticut student-athletes have been honored as recipients of the 2012 1A Faculty Athletics Representative Academic Excellence Award. The award recognizes student-athletes who carry a 3.8 GPA, have competed at an NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision institution for at least two years and graduated between Sept. 1 and Aug. 31 during the academic year.
Lally played in 58 games over four years for the UConn women's lacrosse team. She was honored by the UConn Club as an Outstanding Senior Scholar-Athlete. Lally earned 45 starts and collected 52 ground balls while causing 32 turnovers over her time in a Husky uniform.
Bennett was a wide receiver on the UConn football team.
About FARs
The faculty athletics representative is a designation created and mandated by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). FARs must be members of an institution's faculty and may not hold an administrative or coaching position in the athletics department. Duties vary by institution, but typically an FAR serves as a liaison to the athletics department. The 1A FAR is an advocate for the appropriate balance and effective interaction between an institution's academic mission and its intercollegiate athletics program.
All FARs who serve at NCAA Division 1A institutions are members of 1A FAR.
