STORRS, Conn. - After coming in second at the BIG EAST Championships, the Huskies set their sights on defending six straight titles at the New England Championships. The meet will be held this Friday (Feb. 24) and Saturday (Feb. 25) at Boston University in Boston, Mass. The events are set to begin at 10:00 a.m. on both days.
Looking forward, the team will regain their focus and concentrate on their individual events with team members participating in fewer events then at the BIG EAST Championships. "The New England's is a business trip", Head Coach Greg Roy commented about the upcoming meet.
UConn will look to add a seventh straight title at the New England Championships and has won 17 titles out of the last 18 years of participating overall. Last year at New England's, UConn had several standout performances, including victories by senior captain Mike Alleman and junior Noel James. Alleman was victorious in the shot put with a winning throw of 17.19 meters, while James dominated the high jump clearing 2.13 meters.
The Huskies are currently ranked second in the Northeast Region according to the USTFCCCA Division I Regional Index. In addition, Noel James is currently ranked 13th nationally in the high jump and Amanze Williams is ranked 16th nationally in the long jump, with a jump of 7.61 meters.
This weekend, UConn will try to continue their success at the New England Championships, as well as use this weekend's events to prepare for the IC4A Championships and the NCAA Championships, both of which are scheduled in the upcoming weeks.
