STORRS, Conn.-The men's track and field team will travel to Pennsylvania this Saturday, Feb. 4, to compete in the Sykes-Sabock Challenge cup hosted by Penn State University. The meet is set to begin at 10:00 a.m. at the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track facility and will run throughout the day.
Head Coach Greg Roy, excited about this weekends meet, described the competition by saying, "Besides the Nationally ranked kids on our team, you've got the top two teams in our region, UConn and Cornell, and the top two teams in the mid-Atlantic, Penn State and Princeton, knocking heads. Basically, this meet is the only one where the top-four teams in our quarter of the country face each other, so it is really a special competition at one of the best facilities in the country."
Among the schools competing at this Saturday's contest are Penn State who is first in the Mid-Atlantic region, Cornell who is ranked 2nd in the Northeast region and Connecticut who is currently ranked first in the Northeast Region. With such a strong field, UConn will need a tremendous performance out of the team and are looking for an outstanding effort from several athletes who are nationally ranked themselves.
Members of the team to watch Saturday are junior Joe Clark (West Islip, N.Y.) who became ranked 5th in the country in the mile as well as senior Kyle Duggan (Staten Island, N.Y.) who is ranked 34th in the pole vault. The Huskies also will look for big time performances from several underclassmen such as sophomore Noel James (Whitman, Mass.) who is ranked 15th in high jump and freshman Amanze Williams (New Haven, Conn) who is ranked 11th in the long jump.
A confident Coach Roy remarked, "It is a scoring meet and we are trying to win it". The Huskies with this talented group of young men combined with the leadership of Coach Roy look to overcome the competition in Pennsylvania and continue to climb within the national polls.
