Storrs, Conn.- This weekend the University of Connecticut softball team will travel to Hempstead, New York to play in the Hofstra Tournament hosted by Hofstra University. The team will face an action packed weekend as they play two doubleheaders, both Saturday (3/17) and Sunday (3/18), facing the Hofstra Pride and the University of Maine.
The tournament will begin for the Huskies as they take on host Hofstra (2-11) at 12:30 p.m. Hofstra has had a rocky start to this season losing their first nine games, however the Pride have been playing much better ball of late, going 2-3 in the Citrus Classic Tournament with notable wins over Ohio State and Virginia Tech.
The Huskies will then face the University of Maine Black Bears, who are 5-16 on the season at 3:00p.m. The Black Bears are coming off a badly needed win over Cal State Northridge in the Northridge Classic, which broke a previous ten game losing streak for the Bears. Maine will look to junior pitcher Beth Spoehr to take the mound against the Huskies. Spoehr is coming off her second win of the season where she pitched a complete game shutout and is currently sporting a 5.41 ERA.
On Sunday, the Huskies first face Maine at 10 a.m. and then finish the weekend with a final rematch against Hostra at 3:00 p.m.
Leading the way for UConn this weekend will be senior Amy Vaughn who is currently batting .444 with a slugging percentage of 1.056. Vaughn was recently named to the Bayer CropScience Classic All-Tournament team and will look to continue to boost the Huskies offense over the weekend.
On the mound, UConn will need a dominating performance from junior righthander Kiki Saveriano (Lexington, Mass.), who leads the team with a 3-4 record and is sporting a 4.63 ERA.
After a powerful showing against CSU Bakersfield, where the Huskies won both games in shutout fashion and tied the all-time NCAA record for two grand slams in one inning, UConn will look to continue their offensive rhythm into the weekend and come back to Storrs improving on their current 4-8 record.
