Women's Basketball Set To Begin 2012 NCAA Tournament

BRIDGEPORT, Conn.-The Huskies are set to open play in the 2012 NCAA Tournament on Saturday at approximately 1:30 p.m. at Webster Bank Arena in Bridgeport, Conn. where the squad is the No. 1 seed in the Kingston Regional. UConn will play their opening round game vs. No. 16 seed and SWAC Champion Prairie View A&M (17-15) which will air on ESPN2 with Pam Ward and Rebecca Lobo.
The Huskies (29-4), who have claimed five of the last 10 NCAA titles will be making their 24th consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and sport an 82-16 (.837) mark all-time in NCAA play. The Huskies lay claim to the best winning percentage in NCAA Tournament history.
In this week's ESPN exclusive with President Obama and Doris Burke, President Obama selected the No. 4 Huskies to reach the their 13th Final Four where he has the team falling to BIG EAST foe Notre Dame. To see the President's full bracket, click here.
This season marks the 15th time overall and the sixth-straight season that UConn has entered the NCAA Tournament as a No. 1 seed. The Huskies boast an overall mark of 64-8 in NCAA Tournament games when playing as a No. 1 seed and have captured six National Championships in those seasons.
The Huskies top scorer is senior Tiffany Hayes, named to the WBCA All-Region I Team, who is averaging 15.1 points per game. Hayes not only leads the team in scoring but also in steals (73) and is second in rebounding (5.7). Joining Hayes is BIG EAST Freshman of the Year Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis knocking in 14.8 points per game and sophomore guard Bria Hartley, also named to the WBCA All-Region I Team, with 13.6 ppg. Sophomore center Stefanie Dolson sits atop the rebounding list (6.0 rpg) and blocks (1.3 bpg) for UConn, while adding 10.2 points per game.
The Panthers enter Saturday's game on a five-game win streak with their last victory coming in the SWAC Championship game over Alcorn State, 63-50. The Panthers are averaging 60.1 points per game with Sierra Soliz leading the squad with 12.9 points, while Latia Williams averages 9.9 points and leads the team in rebounding with 6.5 per game.
Saturday's first round contest will also be broadcasted live on the UConn Radio Network with Bob Joyce and Kara Wolters.
