Breanna Stewart Named Naismith High School Player of the Year

HARTFORD - UConn-bound recruit Breanna Stewart, a 6-foot-4 post player North Syracuse, N.Y., was named the Naismith High School Girl's Player of the Year, as announced today by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. Future UConn teammates Moriah Jefferson, a 5-7 point guard from Glenn Heights, Texas, and Morgan Tuck, a 6-2 forward from Bolingbrook, Ill., were also among the seven players named to the award's watch list.
Stewart is the seventh UConn signee to win the award, joining Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis (2011), Elena Delle Donne (2008), Maya Moore (2006, 2007), Ann Strother (2002), Diana Taurasi (2000) and Tamika Williams (1998). Delle Donne ultimately transferred to Delaware.
Stewart will be formally recognized during the Naismith Awards Banquet at the Georgia International Convention Center in Atlanta March 22.

The Atlanta Tipoff Club, founded during the 1956-57 season, has presented the Naismith Trophy every year since UCLA's Lew Alcindor first won the award in 1969. Old Dominion's Anne Donovan won the inaugural Women's Naismith Trophy in 1983.
The Naismith Award has become the most prestigious award in all of college basketball, recognizing the Men's and Women's College Basketball Player of the Year, Men's and Women's College Basketball Coach of the Year, as well as awards for outstanding achievement in high school basketball, officiating, and contribution to the game.
