STORRS, Conn. - The 2013 lacrosse season opens on Saturday for the UConn Huskies with a 1:00 p.m. contest at Iona. In two years under Head Coach Katie Woods, the Huskies have gone 19-13.
The Huskies open with three straight road games, starting at Iona on Saturday at 1 p.m. UConn will then travel to face Boston College at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, February 27. The three-game stretch concludes at Quinnipiac on Saturday, March 2 at 12 p.m.
UConn returns eight of the top-10 scorers from last year's squad that finished 10-6, including 3-5 in BIG EAST action. The Huskies started the season 6-1 before dropping three straight to open BIG EAST play.
Junior Lauren Kahn, a 2012 All-BIG EAST Second Team selection, is the top returning scorer with 30 goals and 11 assists for 41 points last year. She'll headline an offense along with classmate Kacey Pippitt (16-5-21) and seniors Mackenzie Rainone (16-1-17) and Morgan O'Reilly (12-5-17).
Senior Brittney Testa has been the starting goalkeeper the past two seasons and owns a career record of 19-13-0 with a 11.40 goals against average and a .435 save percentage. She finished her junior season with a 10-6 mark based on an 11.00 goals against average and a .462 save percentage.
While UConn returns eight of the top-10 scorers, the Huskies must replace the top-two scorers in two-time First Team All-BIG EAST selection M.E. Lapham (48-14-62) and Kiersten Tupper (27-15-42).
UConn defeated Iona, 10-7, in Storrs in the 2012 season opener.
