The Match-Up
The UConn women's lacrosse team (4-4) returns to action on Wednesday (3 p.m.) on the road against in-state foe Fairfield (4-2) at Rafferty Stadium. The match will be the second of three straight road games for the Huskies, who are 1-4 away from Storrs this season. Connecticut sports an all-time record of 8-4 against the Stags in a series that dates back to 1997.
Last Time Out
The Huskies saw their three-game winning streak snapped on Saturday when they fell to No. 3 Boston College, 13-5, at Newton Field in Chestnut Hill, Mass. Junior attacker Carly Palmucci (Herndon, Va.) paced the Connecticut offense with a team-high two goals, while juniors Katherine Finkelston (Leonardtown, Md.) and Alexandra Crofts (Westport, Conn.) and sophomore Ally Tilley (Setauket, N.Y.) each registered a score in the loss.
UConn struggled on the draw against the Eagles, controlling just three of the 19 draws, and Boston College finished the match with a 30-15 shot advantage. Junior goalkeeper Shannon Nee (Lancaster, Pa.) tallied double-digit saves for the second time this season and the ninth time in her career after recording 10 saves on Saturday. Connecticut's five goals marked a season-low for the Huskies, and UConn dropped to 0-2 against ranked opponents on the year with the setback.
Scouting The Stags
Fairfield enters Wednesday's contest with wins in three of its last four games and two home victories on the year. The Stags defeated Central Connecticut, 13-9, on Friday behind hat tricks from senior midfielder Courtney Chmil and sophomore midfielder Alex Fehmel. Fehmel leads all Fairfield players with 15 points on 10 goals and five assists, and she ranks second on the team in caused turnovers (6) and fourth in draw controls (6).
The Mustangs' 7.17 goals allowed per match is good for the 11th-best mark among Division I schools, and Fairfield goalkeeper Chelsey Sidaras ranks seventh nationally in save percentage (.529). Fairfield is 2-2 overall at home this season, and UConn has won four its five away games against the Mustangs. The Huskies edged Fairfield, 8-7, in Storrs last season behind two goals each from Finkelston and Crofts.
Next Up
After Wednesday, UConn will open Big East play on Sunday on the road against Cincinnati at Gettler Stadium. The match against the Bearcats gets underway at 12 p.m. The Huskies finished at 5-2 in conference play last season.
