UConn captured the inaugural American Athletic Conference crown in 2014 before finishing third in a tightly-contested meet a season ago. In total, UConn has won 10 conference indoor titles in its history.
"We've either won or had a chance to win all four of The American championships since the league's inception," said Husky head coach Greg Roy. "Houston looks good on paper and there will be a lot of competition but with Connecticut on our chests, we always have a chance."
In 2015, the meet came down to the final event before Houston claimed the title with 135 team points, edging out Tulsa (134) and the Huskies (131) for the crown. In the first-ever American meet, the Huskies hoisted the indoor crown after finishing with 158 points, besting second-place Louisville (123 points) and Houston (116 points). The team won a pair of events en route to the championship win, claiming the 4x400 meter relay and owning the mile run. The 4x400 team finished in 3:14.23 to seal the win in the final competition of the day, while Mike O'Donnell's gold medal in the mile run started off the final day of the meet.Following the conclusion of the meet, the UConn coaching staff was named the conference's Coaching Staff of the Year.
