Huskies Host Three-Game Series with UCF

STORRS, Conn. - After sweeping its doubleheader with Bryant in its 2016 home opener, the University of Connecticut softball team jumps back into American Athletic Conference play with a three-set weekend series against UCF at Burrill Family Field on April 1-3. First pitch on Friday and Saturday will take place at 2 p.m. before the Huskies and Knights round out the weekend with a noon contest on Sunday.
UConn (13-20) is coming off a pair of wins in a midweek doubleheader against Bryant on Wednesday. Junior RHP Kayla Doty tossed her fourth complete-game victory of the season with a two-hit shutout as the Huskies started the day with a 2-0 win. Junior C Dominique Pinto and senior SS Lexi Gifford each crushed three-run homers in the second game of the day and the Huskies went on to take a dominating 15-2 victory.
Through 33 games, Gifford leads the team with a .289 batting average and 28 hits. Pinto tops the squad with 20 RBIs and six doubles thus far. In the circle, sophomore righty Chelsea Eckert has a team-high five wins, while Doty holds a 2.26 ERA.
The Huskies are 1-10 all-time against the Knights, including three losses in the 2015 campaign. UConn last bested their conference foes, 4-3, on March 2, 2013 in a regular season tournament played in Orlando, Fla.
Central Florida is currently receiving votes (10) in the weekly USA Today/Coaches poll. The Knights sport a 23-13 overall record and their series with the Huskies will be the first league games of the 2016 season.
