Final Home Series Pits Huskies Against Cougars

STORRS, Conn. - Heading into the final home weekend of the season, the University of Connecticut softball team will fight for position in the American Athletic Conference tournament when Houston comes to town for a three-game set.
The Huskies (18-26, 3-7 AAC) currently sit in sixth place, but have a chance to pass the Cougars in the AAC standings this weekend if they can win two of three games. Friday begins the weekend series, with first pitch at 4 p.m.
Saturday's game, Junior Husky Club Day, will be at 2 p.m., while Sunday's contest is Senior Day. UConn's five graduating seniors will be honored in a pregame ceremony prior to first pitch.
Riding a two-game winning streak, the Huskies enter the weekend with momentum after a dominating 16-0 win over Hartford on Wednesday. Five different players recorded multiple hits and multiple RBI in the victory.
Freshman pitcher Jill Stockley continues to lead the team in ERA (2.43), wins (eight), complete games (eight), innings (115.1) and strikeouts (65). Senior Lexi Gifford is the team-leader in hits (40), runs (32), RBI (24), and total bases (55).
With the win on Wednesday, the Huskies improved to 15-19 in non-league play this season, their best mark since 2013. UConn is 6-3 at home this season and has won three of its last four games in Storrs.
Houston Report
The Cougars (21-26, 4-8 AAC) have lost four of their last five games, while dropping two of three contests at East Carolina last weekend. Houston is just 3-11 in road games this season.
Maya Thomas leads the team with a .402 batting average, third-best in the AAC. Elise Lebeouf's 33 RBI are fifth-most in the conference, while Courtney Klingler's 11 home runs are second-most. Opposing batters are hitting .298 off Houston pitchers and have combined to hit 36 homers, the highest total in the league.
The high-point of the league season for Houston came when it handed first-place South Florida its only conference loss of the season, beating the Bulls, 5-2, on April 3 in Tampa, Fla.
