Seeking redemption against Memphis and Tulane
STORRS, Conn.—The Huskies are heading down South for their final pair of road matches of the 2018 campaign. UConn will seek redemption in these rematches against the Memphis Tigers and Tulane Green Wave.
Friday, Nov. 9th
UConn (12-14, 4-9 AAC) will make their first stop in Memphis, Tenn. to faceoff with Memphis (11-14, 4-9 AAC) at 8:00 p.m. As a reminder the Tigers are led by Head Coach Sean Brudette, who is currently in his first season at the helm. He is assisted by Associate Head Coach James Onikeku and Assistant Coach Alexa Wharton. Memphis returned two starters and lost four. The Tigers have added six newcomers to their top returners in; Hannah Flowers, Kelsea Bivins, Kate Hoerdemann, and Mady Ruhlman.
These two teams took the match on Oct. 21st to five sets. The Huskies went down in the match but battled back to take two sets and force the issue. In the fifth set, Memphis took the match 3-2. During the match senior setter Emma Turner and freshman middle blocker/right-side hitter Kennadie Jake-Turner set season highs. Turner's 61 assists remain a season high but is two shy of her career high set last season at 63. Jake-Turner's 16 kills, 19.5 points, as well as seven total blocks double-dip as a season and career high.
Currently, Memphis is No. 8 in the American Athletic Conference just a few spots ahead of UConn.
Sunday, Nov. 11th
The Huskies' final road match will be played in The Big Easy against the Green Wave (21-7, 9-4 AAC as of Nov. 6th) at 2:00 p.m. Head Coach Jim Barnes, third season, leads Tulane with assistance Brian Yale and Sarah Strasner. The Green Wave returned five starters and added five newcomers to their efforts.
Back on Oct. 19th, UConn hosted Tulane in a three set match where the Green Wave barely escaped the grasp of the Huskies in the opening set 25-22.
In the 2018 AAC Women's Volleyball Standings, Tulane is No. 4.
This past week in Husky volleyball…
UConn hosted the Sunshine State's finest to open the month of November, UCF on Nov. 1st and USF on Nov. 3rd. Although the Huskies didn't nab the win, senior libero/defensive specialist Elizabeth Kline surpassed 1,000 career digs in the match. Kline is the third senior to post a career high for the Huskies. In the match against USF, UConn took the regular season series with a final score of 3-1. As a team the Huskies posted nine service aces, tying their season high. Also during the match, three different student-athletes nabbed season highs; sophomore Ally Barrett, redshirt-freshman Courtney Morris, and senior Iman McGary.
Kline and McGary were recognized, for the first time this season, by the AAC for their tremendous play during the weekend. The pair earned a spot on the AAC Weekly Honor Roll. Huskies in the AAC: Turner has 11 double-doubles and is No.1 for assists, freshman Caylee Parker is No.3 in kills and No.4 in points, while Kline is No.10 in digs.
