STORRS, Conn. – Head coach Margaret Rodriguez and the women's soccer team has announced the signing of Jessica Mazo, the 2018 High School Girls' National Player of the Year.
Jess is one of those players that don't come around too often, said Rodriguez. "She is gifted in every aspect of her game. She is a center-mid that can attack on the dribble, play a final pass, and can finish. She is relentless on both sides of the ball in the midfield and is a force to be reckoned with. Jess is a class act on the field and off and we cannot wait to see her to impact our program next fall."
Mazo becomes just the fifth Connecticut player to win National Player of the Year, following in the footsteps of Kristine Lilly (1986), Vanessa Pruzinsky (1998), Kia Mcneil (2003) and Jenna Bike (2015).
The incoming Husky had an impressive high school career at Saint Joseph High School in Trumbull, Conn. while also playing for Yankee United club team. She is a three-time All-American and CHSCA Girls Soccer Player of the Year.
Mazo's helped Saint Joseph win three Class L State Championships and the 2017 FCIAC title. She was a two-time captain that took home four All-FCIAC, three All-State and three All-Region honors.
While dominating on the soccer field, the Bridgeport, Conn. native earned National Honor Society status in the classroom and was an honor roll student every year in school.
