TAMPA, Fla. - The UConn softball team brought an aggressive approach to the plate against USF starter Georgina Corrick on Sunday, getting hits and finding ways to get on base, but the Bulls' offense proved too potent in a 9-0 loss at the USF Softball Complex.
A trio of freshmen - Briana Marcelino, Maura Glatczak and Reese Guevarra - recorded singles for UConn (13-19, 0-3 American) in the five-inning defeat. Senior Chelsea Eckert (1-2) picked up the loss in the circle.
It was a six-run fourth inning, topped off by a grand slam from Astin Donovan, that extended the USF lead to nine runs - eventually completing the weekend sweep of the Huskies.
Four pitchers got work for UConn in the game, including sophomore Katie Koshes, who threw two innings in relief of Eckert. The pitching staff surrendered only a pair of hits in the game, but walked eight batters.
The Huskies managed to get runners on base from the start of the game - beginning with an infield single from Marcelino in the first. In the second inning, Glatczak worked a nice at-bat that ended with a single to right field.
Later in the third frame, Guevarra punched a liner over the third baseman's head down the left field line. UConn reached base in four of five innings against Corrick and reliever JoJo McGill, but stranded four runners throughout the contest.

Eckert came out strong with a perfect inning in the first, but was relieved by Koshes after loading the bases in the second. An RBI single by Macy Cook gave USF an early 2-0 advantage.
Koshes hurled a scoreless frame in the third, but failed to record an out in the fourth - walking the bases loaded. Sophomore Carli Cutler relieved her in the circle, walking home a pair of runs before junior Jill Stockley took over.
Down 5-0, it was a grand slam by Donovan off Stockley that gave USF permanent control of the game. McGill pitched the last inning for the Bulls, allowing a walk to senior Emma Stanley, but retiring the final three batters.
UConn is scheduled to go back to work on Tuesday with a non-conference trip to Hofstra at 3 p.m. ET, before the home-opening series with Wichita State from Thursday to Saturday.
