STORRS, Conn. - Sophomore Carli Cutler and freshman Reese Guevarra each recorded RBI hits on Friday, but the UConn softball team stranded 10 runners on base against Wichita State - falling to the Shockers, 8-2, at Burrill Family Field.
The Huskies (13-22, 0-5 American) managed several offensive chances throughout the day, but were hurt by three errors and a four-run sixth inning from Wichita State (20-12, 3-2 American). Senior pitcher Chelsea Eckert (1-3) got the loss in the circle.
Six different players had hits for UConn in the second game of the weekend series, including freshman shortstop Briana Marcelino, who extended her hitting streak to four games and her on-base streak to six. She scored on an RBI single by Cutler in the third inning.
Sophomore pitcher Katie Koshes made her second relief appearance in as many days, allowing just one run with a pair of strikeouts over two innings of work. Eckert worked through five frames, allowing four earned runs (seven total) on six hits with two strikeouts.
The Huskies were off to a fast start against Wichita State starter Caitlin Bingham, loading the bases in the second inning while facing a 2-0 deficit. However, freshman Maura Glatczak lined into a double play to end the threat.
In the third inning, UConn got on the board when Marcelino hit a lead-off double and scored on a single up the middle by Cutler to cut the deficit to 2-1. The Huskies loaded the bases in the inning against Bingham, but a fly out by Guevarra ended the frame.

The Shockers added two runs in the fourth, with help from a throwing error by Eckert - followed by an RBI single from Mackenzie Wright - to make it 4-1. In the sixth, Wichita State added four more runs off Eckert and Koshes to take a seven-run lead.
In the sixth, Guevarra drove in senior Ryne Nakama with an RBI double to left center off reliever Mckenzie Weber to cut the lead to 8-2. It was the fifth RBI of the year for the first-year outfielder.
With runners on base, the Huskies were just 3-for-19 (.158) at the plate on Friday. Senior Emma Stanley, redshirt freshman Olivia Sappington and Glatczak each recorded hits in the loss.
The final game of this American Athletic Conference series is scheduled for Saturday at 12 p.m. back at Burrill, as UConn looks to take a game from the Shockers before Easter.
