Nurse Named 2018 NCAA Woman of the Year Award Top 30 Honoree

INDIANAPOLIS – Recent UConn women's basketball alumna Kia Nurse has been named a Top 30 honoree for the 2018 NCAA Woman of the Year Award, as announced by the NCAA Thursday.

A record 581 school nominees was narrowed to 154 conference office nominees, from which the 30 honorees were selected. The selection committee will announce the nine finalists, including three women from each NCAA division, in early October. The Top 30 will be celebrated and the Woman of the Year will be named Oct. 28 at a ceremony in Indianapolis.

In her four years at UConn, Nurse helped the Huskies to two NCAA Championships and eight American Athletic Conference Championships. She was named the conference's Freshman of the Year in 2018 and Defensive Player of the Year in 2018.

Nurse was named the WBCA's National Defensive Player of the Year in 2018. In 2017 and 2018, the Hamilton, Ontario, native was named a CoSIDA Third Team Academic All-American. She graduated in May with an individualized degree in sport in media.

Nurse has been a member of the Canadian Senior National Team since 2013. She has competed in the 2014 FIBA World Championship, 2015 Pan Am Games, 2015 FIBA Americans World Championship and 2016 Olympic Games with Canada.

The No. 10 pick in the first round of the 2018 WNBA Draft, Nurse recently completed her first pro season with the New York Liberty. Nurse had seven starts and ranked second on the team with 9.1 points per game. She is currently training with the Canadian National Team ahead of the 2018 FIBA Women's Basketball World Cup. Nurse will compete for the Canberra Capitals this winter in Australia's Women's National Basketball League.
