Moose Akanno Promoted to Assistant Director of Cross Country and Track & Field

STORRS, Conn. – UConn Director of Cross Country and Track & Field Greg Roy announced that Moose Akanno has been promoted to Assistant Director of Cross Country and Track & Field.
"Coach Akanno has diligently worked to build the men's program for the last six years," stated Roy. "During the transition from separate to combined men's and women's track and field and cross country programs, he has been phenomenal. Moose has been instrumental in a process that couldn't have gone more smoothly. This title is well deserved."
"It has been exciting to be a part of all the change going on here at UConn," stated Akanno. "I love the direction this program and the athletic department is going. In a short period of time we have already seen so much positive change, I look forward to seeing just how far we can take the UConn track and field/cross country program as a whole."
Akanno begins his sixth season at UConn in 2019-20 and will continue to work with the UConn Jumpers, Sprinters, and multi-eventers.
Akanno is in his second stint at UConn as a coach, having returned to his alma mater after serving as an undergraduate assistant coach in 2009, and coaching stops at Dartmouth and at Fairleigh Dickinson. Prior to coaching, he was a four-year letter-winner for Connecticut and was a part of the Husky track teams that won three indoor Big East Championships, as well as three New England Championships.
While at UConn, Akanno was part of the Big East Conference Coaching Staff of the Year in 2009 after winning the Indoor Championship.
During his time at Dartmouth, Akanno has helped guide several individuals to record-setting performances and Heptagonal Champions. His former student-athletes on the women's side broke records in high jump, long jump, triple jump, pentathlon as well as sprint hurdles during both indoor and outdoor seasons. Under his guidance, he helped elevate the men's sprints and jumps to new heights with numerous program records and top-five showings by several student-athletes.
As an athlete on the track, Akanno was named co-captain of the 2008 track team which Big East Indoor Championship.
