STORRS, Conn. - As is tradition, the UConn baseball team concluded its fall workouts atop Cemetery Hill,at the graves of university founders, Charles and Augustus Storrs. Head coach Jim Penders revealed seniors Chris Winkel and Paul Gozzo as 2020 captains, as voted on by the team.Â
Winkel remains in a leadership position after being a tri-captain during the 2019 season. The Orange, Conn. native played all 64 games for the Huskies in 2019, hitting .264 with 13 doubles, team-leading five triples, two homers and 44 runs batted in. This fall the athletic Winkel has been transitioning from his normal first base postilion to the outfield, mainly in center field.Â

Gozzo becomes a captain after showing leadership qualities the past two years at UConn. 2019 was the first year Gozzo saw the field after sitting out 2018 after transferring from Tulane. The Wallingford, Conn. native had a knack for dramatics in 2019 with clutch go-ahead home runs against No. 4 Louisville and at Texas State to help lead the Huskies to a pair of big series victories. The UConn catcher closed out the year with an Oklahoma City All-Tournament team selection.Â
The Huskies open the 2020 season in the MLB4 Tournament in Scottsdale, Ariz. on Feb. 14 against Cal Poly at 4 p.m. ET.Â
