MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The UConn women's tennis team closed out a trip to AAC opponent Memphis on Saturday by facing Lipscomb in a neutral site dual match. The Huskies picked-up a pair of singles wins but came up short in the match, falling to the Bison, 5-2.
"This was a tough match against a very good team," stated head coach Glenn Marshall. "They were solid in the top 3 singles spots, and we came up just a little short. A few of the bright spots today were Cassie Chung and Jacque Lazaro. Cassie was feeling under the weather, but won both her matches with great effort and fight. Laz was playing her first match back in over a month due to injury, and she fought hard for a nice victory in singles."
The Huskies got a good start to doubles with the No. 3 team of freshman Mireille Moreau (Warwick, Quebec) and junior Cassie Chung (Vancouver, British Columbia) posting a 6-1 win over Thabile Tshatedi and Maddox Bandy to open things up. The Bison recovered and closed out the doubles point at No. 1 and No. 2.
In singles play, senior Jacqueline Lazaro (Largo, Fla.) grabbed a win at No. 6 over Bandy, winning 6-4 and 6-4. Chung notched a three-set win at No. 4 over Denise Buberl. After dropping the opening set 6-1, Chung stormed right back and won 6-2 and 6-3.
At No. 5, senior Gillian Perrotta (Scarsdale, N.Y.) lost a tough three-set battle to Liza Diachenko. Perrotta took the opening set 6-3 and lost a tough second set, 7-6 (2). In the third set tie-breaker, Diachenko outlasted the UConn senior, 12-10, to take it.
UConn returns home and to host Stony Brook at the Magic Lincer Tennis Club in Manchester on Friday at 1 pm.
