EAST HARTFORD, Conn. – The UConn men's tennis team once again used a strong doubles performance to grab an early lead but came up just short in singles play as Delaware posted a 4-3 win Sunday afternoon at the East Hartford Tennis Club.
"The Huskies come out hot with 6-0 victory at No. 2 doubles and Justin Warren and Christian Provenzano stepped up big to close out the doubles point on court three," stated associate head coach Reinaldo Valor. "Unfortunately, consistent singles play on all six courts has been a big issue for us. We need more consistent singles play down the stretch to pull out some of these close matches."
Senior Jack McLister (Leesburg, Va.) and sophomore John Michael Holtmann (Coral Gables, Fla.) improved to 14-8 this season, winning their fourth-straight together by opening with a 6-0 win over Nathan Benyowitz and Milo Nagle at No. 2. After a UD win at No. 1, the Huskies team of senior Justin Warren (Durham, N.C.) and freshman Christian Provenzano (Montclair, N.J.) clinched the doubles point at No. 3 with a 6-4 win over Blaise Casselbury and Guilherme Valdoleiros.
In singles, the Huskies picked-up wins by seniors McLister and Warren, both in three sets. McLister took down Casselbury at No. 4, coming back from dropping the first set, 6-4. He rebounded to win 6-2 and 7-6 (6) to notch his 12th win on the season.
Warren won at No. 5, beating Nagle to improve to 14-11 this season. Warren won the first set 6-4, dropped the second 6-4 but stormed back in the third to leave no doubt with a 6-0 win.
"We are about to get into the toughest part of the schedule," commented Valor. "I'm hoping the guys can step up down the stretch!"
The Huskies, who are 7-8 overall in dual matches this season, will head to Florida for their spring break trip that will feature matches against UAB, Florida Atlantic, Palm Beach Atlantic and Miami.
