GAINESVILLE, Fla. – The UConn Huskies hoped right back on plane and headed for the "Sunshine State" once more this weekend to take part in the Pepsi Florida Relays at the University of Florida's Percy Beard Track. UConn sent a limited roster to the event but will come home to Connecticut with plenty of performances to be please about.
"We didn't know what to expect with the quick turnaround from last week, and how we could respond," commented head coach Greg Roy. "We really accomplished a lot this weekend. This was a really, really productive meet for us."
"Led by (Jordan) Torney, (Kyle) Brackman and (Tyler) Gleen, who all did a great, job and our 4x400 relay, who really impressed," stated Roy. "Todd (Stueber) was great in both the discus and shot and Malik (Snead) was really good in the triple. We had a lot of guys who should be looking at NCAA regional marks with their performances. A really solid meet all around."
Senior Kyle Brackman (Berkeley Heights, N.J.) got things kicked-off on Thursday night setting a new personal best in the 5,000 meters with a blazing time of 14:06.92, good for a second place finish in the 42 runner field. Brackman shattered his previous best time in the event (14:27.51) as he currently sits at the top of the AAC rankings in the event.
Classmate Sebastian Castano (Cresskill, N.J.) also got in on the action on Thursday night and followed suit in the personal best department. Castano took ninth in the hammer and did it with a new top mark of 55.57 meters (182'4"), set on his first attempt of the day. Castano tops his previous mark (55.31m) set at last spring's AAC Championship.
