Cegles Retires After Nearly 40 Years in Athletics Administration
STORRS, Conn. - Vic Cegles, who has served as the deputy director of athletics at UConn since June of 2016 and has worked in athletics administration since 1981, has announced his retirement effective at the end of the 2019 UConn baseball season.
"I have been most fortunate in my career to have worked at terrific academic and athletic institutions alongside outstanding administrators," Cegles said. "The experiences and successes have enriched my life and provided lasting friendships and professional relationships. To be sure, I will miss the daily competition and helping young people and coaches pursue championships and life success but it is time to accommodate my family, golf and a more relaxed pace. Per the Harbaugh perspective, who had it better than me?"
During his time at UConn, Cegles provided leadership for all the external areas of the athletics department and was the sport administrator for several sports.
"Vic is the person who offered me my first job in intercollegiate athletics and for that, I will be forever grateful," director of athletics David Benedict said. "Vic has been a great friend and an ideal mentor who spent countless hours with me sharing his insight about the amazing and critically important role we have in leading coaches and student-athletes. Wherever he has worked, Vic has been a valued and trusted member of the athletics staff and his time at UConn was no exception. I wish he and Bonnie all my best as they embark on the next chapter of their lives and I find comfort in knowing that Vic will always be a phone call away."
Cegles came to UConn after spending 10 years as the director of athletics at Long Beach State. He was selected as the 2014-15 Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year in NCAA I-AAA by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics.
While at Long Beach, Cegles and his team participated in the university's first ever capital campaign and raised over $25 million for athletics that supported locker room renovations, stadium scoreboards, videoboards, branding displays, a baseball hitting and training facility and scholarship enhancement.
Long Beach teams captured 36 Big West championships, made 70 NCAA postseason appearances under his leadership and have won the conference "Commissioner's Cup" six-consecutive years.
Cegles was a senior associate athletics director at Arizona State from 1986-2002 directing media relations, marketing/promotions, television/radio, sport properties and athletics development while administrating baseball, men's and women's golf and the women's gymnastics program.
A native of Niagara Falls, N.Y., Cegles also worked in senior athletic department management roles at Rutgers (1981-86) and Temple (2003-06).
A 1970 graduate of Bucknell University with a degree in business administration, he was a co-captain of both the basketball and baseball teams.
Cegles and his wife Bonnie have two sons: Vic, a former baseball standout at Rutgers, is the deputy director of athletics at Albany; and Casey, a former wide receiver at Towson University, is the deputy athletic director at Kent State.
