Each week, we will profile a freshmen on the UConn football team. Check UConnHuskies.com throughout the season!
Freshman wide receiver Matt Drayton comes to UConn all the way from Jacksonville, Florida. He played his high school football at William Raines, where he was a captain.
After his first college football game, in which he led the Huskies with five receptions for 51 yards in the win over Wagner, he sat down to answer some questions.
Q: Why did you pick UConn?
MD: The coaches showed love when I came on the visit. I felt like it was the place for me, and my mom wanted me to be here too.
Q: What's your favorite thing about playing football at UConn so far?
MD: The coaches. Like I said, they showed love and each and every week they're getting me better.
Q: What has been the highlight of your football career to this point?
MD: I say fall camp. I had a one-handed catch.
Q: How would you describe your first college football game experience?
MD: It was good. I mean I gotta get better, but it was good.
Q: What do you feel is the best part of your game?
MD: My ability to adjust to the ball.
Q: What's something that you want the UConn fans to know about you?
MD: I came here to turn the football team up, so come out and support.
Q: Any reason you picked #88?
MD: Dez Bryant. I feel like I'm Dez Bryant from time to time.
Q: How does it feel to be able to get a lot of snaps as a true freshman?
MD: It's nerve wracking because who would expect to come in as a freshman in D1 football and start. And then I'm trying to get used to the speed of D1 football.
Q: What's a personal goal for you this season?
MD: To become Rookie of the Year.
Matt has big expectations for himself and the team this year. Be sure to come out to the Rent to follow the progress Matt and his classmates are making throughout the 2019 season.
