HOUSTON, Texas – Day one of the 2020 American Athletic Conference Championships is in the books at the University of Houston. Wednesday evening was highlighted by the men's 200 medley relay team that took second place in the event and broke the UConn school record.
The previous school record was 1:28.35, with three of the four members of that team breaking their own record Wednesday night. Senior Will Kearsey, junior Rowan King, senior Cooper Knapp, and junior Kyle Dunlap, finished the event with a time of 1:26.65, shattering the school record.
"Great way to finish off the day, with the medley substantially breaking the school record. Really proud of our effort in that event," said head coach Chris Maiello.
"I think they showed a lot of perseverance today, they came back and performed well. We are in a good position starting the meet tomorrow."
Relay anchor Kyle Dunlap said afterward that the preparation was the same as any other meet. "We warmed up like any other meet. We trust the process here."
"There were a lot of nerves before the race, but we put it in the back of our minds, went out there and just did our jobs. We placed, got on the podium which is the goal. And breaking the school record on top of that is awesome."
The day's first final was the men's 1M dive, where senior Kyle Kennedy finished in eighth place with a final score of 265.15. The senior made the 1M final earlier Wednesday morning.
"The men had a solid day, Kyle making the 1M final and putting together a great list of dives. Torry and Justin also had some great diving and finished second and third in the consols, respectively," said head diving coach Josh Arndt.
The men's 800 free relay team also competed in the finals of the event. The team took fourth, with a time of 6:34.06.
