CONCORD, Mass. – For the second consecutive round, outgoing UConn senior Tim Umphrey and incoming UConn freshman Caleb Manuel had matching scores at the 91st New England Amateur Golf Championship. Unlike Tuesday's first round, however, the duo did not finish the round at the top of the leaderboard at the Concord Country Club.
Tuesday, Umphrey (Northborough, Mass.) and Manuel (Topsham, Me.) each shot a 4-under 66 to share a one-stroke lead after Round 1. In Wednesday's Round 2, Umphrey, playing out of Tatnuck (Mass.) Country Club, and Manuel, playing out of Brunswick (Me.) Golf Club, each shot a 3-over 73.
Their two-round totals of 1-under 139 were part of a five-way tie for second place, two strokes behind John Broderick of Dedham (Mass.) Country and Polo Club, who fired a second-round 65 for a two-round 3-under 137.
Umphrey and Manuel, along with the other 44 players who survived Wednesday's cut, will be competing in the final two rounds of the tournament on Thursday. Three other players with UConn ties also survived the cut and will be playing in the final two rounds.
Incoming UConn freshman Tommy Dallahan (Simsbury, Conn.) shot a 1-under 69 in the second round and his 1-over 141 left him in a three-way tie for ninth place.
Rising UConn junior Jared Nelson (Rutland, Vt.) shot a second round 71 to post a 3-over 143, placing him in a seven-way deadlock for 13th place.
Current UConn assistant coach Max Major (Rutland, Vt.) had a 2-over 72 in the second round and his 6-over 146 leaves him in an eight-player logjam tied for 32nd place.
