CONCORD, Mass. -- Incoming UConn freshman Caleb Manuel (Topsham, Me.) waited through a lengthy rain delay, then stepped up and finished a solid 1-under par 69 Thursday to secure a third-place finish in the 91st New England Amateur Golf Championship at Concord Country Club.
The wet conditions shortened the tournament to 54 holes and Manuel's aggregate 2-under 66-73-69=208, was just two strokes behind co-leaders John Broderick (Dedham, Mass.) and Nick Maccario (Bradford, Mass.), who both shot 4-under 206. Broderick defeated Maccario in a playoff to capture the title.
Four other players with UConn ties competed in Thursday's final round.
Rising UConn junior Jared Nelson (Rutland, Vt.) fired a 1-under 69 on Thursday and his 2-over 72-71-69=212 was good enough to finish alone in fifth place.
Right behind was graduated senior Tim Umphrey (Northborough, Mass.) whose 3-over 66-73-74=213 put him in a two-player tie for sixth place.
Current UConn assistant coach Max Major (Rutland, Vt.) finished in a tie for 21st place with a 7-over 74-72-71=217.
Incoming freshman Tommy Dallahan (Simsbury, Conn.) collected a 10-over 72-69-79=220 to finish in a tie for 33rd among the 46 players who made the cut.
