STORRS, Conn. – Freshman phenom Paige Bueckers poured in a career high 32 points and dished-out seven assists while classmate Aaliyah Edwards added a career-best 22 points on 9-11 shooting to lead the No. 3 University of Connecticut women's basketball team to a 94-62 rout of St. John's on Wednesday evening at Gampel Pavilion in Storrs, Conn.
With the win, the Huskies improve to 12-1 on the year and 10-0 in BIG EAST play. The Red Storm slip to 5-10 on the year and 2-8 in the loop.
Bueckers' 32 points were only two-points shy of Tina Charles' single-game freshman record, which was set during the 2006-07 season.
The Huskies started slowly and led by only one-point, 13-12, after Unique Drake connected on a pullup jumper with 2:57 left in the first quarter. However, UConn seized control of the game by rattling off the last nine points of the first quarter and extended the lead to 20 points, 44-24, at intermission.
Despite 33 points from Leilani Correa, the Red Storm were unable to pull any closer than 17 points as the Huskies cruised to a lopsided victory.
Bueckers was 13-20 from the floor and her seven dimes came against only two turnovers in 39-minutes of action. Edwards' outstanding night included nine rebounds in 35-minutes of action, and she was a spotless 4-4 from the charity stripe.
Nika Muhl added 11 points to go along with six assists and four steals while Olivia Nelson-Ododa also chipped in with 11 points and five boards.
The Huskies shot 54 percent from the floor and buried 15-of-17 attempts from the free throw line. The Huskies also held a decisive 30-21 edge on the glass. UConn forced the Red Storm into 27 turnovers and converted those miscues into 37 points.
The Huskies are back in action on Friday, February 5 when the team travels to Milwaukee to take on Marquette. Game time is set for 7 p.m. ET and the contest will be televised regionally on SNY.
