EAST HARTFORD – Nearly 150 UConn athletes got the chance to celebrate their 2021 graduation as the university was able to hold outdoor ceremonies at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field.
With a limited number of guests allowed, UConn graduation was spread out over several days, most taking place on Saturday and Sunday. Graduates heard a virtual commencement speech from U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona, a Connecticut native and himself a UConn doctorate grad.
Cardona spoke about the difficulties that students faced over the past year due to the pandemic, but lauded the resilience that all have shown in response.
The athletes among the graduates could certainly relate. From the 2020 spring season through the present day, college athletes have experienced postponements, cancellations, pauses, shutdowns and restarts, yet have managed to get through a full winter season and a spring season that even included some delayed fall sports.
If 2021 graduation was a signal that a semblance of normalcy is imminent, it was clearly worth the celebration.
