The UConn women's rowing team will count on leadership from a trio of captains to capitalize on the upcoming 2021-22 season. As announced by head coach Jen Sanford, the team will be led by rising seniors Emilie Karovic, Aliyah Louis and Maia Moscova. Karovic will be entering her fourth year with the program while Louis and Moscova will be in their third.
"Typically, our captains are selected through a team vote," UConn coach Jen Sanford said. "However, the past sixteen months created many unique and challenging situations. There was less opportunity for the underclassman to interact with upperclassman outside of practice and competition due to the pandemic. During that time, our staff recognized the leadership potential in Emilie, Aliyah, and Maia and made the decision based on our current teams needs moving forward. It's going to be a great year, and we are excited to work together with the captains and the team to represent UConn rowing and the University with pride."
Karovic (Galloway, N.J.), a UConn rowing veteran who competed in the Varsity Eight for most of the 2020-21 season, is looking forward to being an integral part of the program's rebirth.
"I am so thankful to the coaches for selecting me as a captain," she said after learning of her new role. "This team has made a huge impact on me over the last few years and I plan to be a leader that the team can look to for guidance and support. We have a great opportunity to grow as a team this year and I look forward to being a leader in that process. I will continue to help foster the systems of support and encouragement that have always made this team special."
Louis (Shelton, Conn.), a walk-on who found her rhythm in the Third Varsity Eight last year, hopes to fuel this upcoming season with confidence she gained from the outpouring of encouragement by supporters of the program.
"It's been an honor to be a member of the rowing program and work together with such a strong and powerful group of women," Louis shared. "This team has become my family and I am extremely grateful for all the experiences and memories that have been created so far. I hope to inspire my teammates as they have inspired me. We're looking forward to the new season and are appreciative of all the love and support we've received along the way."
Moscova (Trumbull, Conn.), also a walk-on who experienced success in the Third Varsity Eight last season, is eager to begin her new leadership role and help promote a cohesive, high-energy team environment.
"I am incredibly excited and honored to be selected as a captain and leader of the team for this upcoming year," Moscova emphasized. "I am proud of all that we have accomplished in reinstating the program and look forward to representing UConn rowing at the University. We are bringing the positive energy and focusing on being united as one, working hard, and striving for success. I believe this is going to be a really great year!"
