No. 6 UConn to Open 2022-23 Season Against Northeastern

STORRS, Conn. – The sixth-ranked UConn women's basketball team (0-0) opens the 2022-23 season against Northeastern (1-0) Thursday at 7 p.m. in Gampel Pavilion.
UConn has won 26 consecutive season openers with the last loss coming in 1995-96. The Huskies are 40-8 all-time in season openers. UConn is 33-4 in season openers under Geno Auriemma.
Thursday is UConn's Huskies & Heroes Military Appreciation Night. Camo fanny packs will be available to the first 300 fans.
UConn beat Division II Kutztown, 115-42, in an exhibition last Sunday in the XL Center. Sophomore Azzi Fudd led the Huskies with 29 points, making nine three pointers in the game. Five Huskies scored in double digits in the tuneup: Fudd, Lou Lopez Senechal (22), Dorka Juhasz (20), Aaliyah Edwards (17) and Ayanna Patterson (10). The Huskies had 50 paint points and 46 points off turnovers against Kutztown.
UConn is 11-3 all-time vs. Northeastern, including 4-1 under Geno Auriemma. The teams last faced off on Nov. 14, 2009. UConn opened the game on a 28-0 run as Tina Charles led the Connecticut Huskies with 26 points and 13 rebounds.
Northeastern opened the 2022-23 season with a 66-65 win over Boston University on Monday. Junior Derin Erdogan led the Huskies with 24 points. Sophomore Gemima Moterna was named to the preseason All-CAA Honorable Mention team. Northeastern was picked to finish eighth in the Preseason CAA Coaches Poll. The Huskies finished 2021-22 with a 14-18 overall record. Head coach Bridgette Mitchell is in her second season at Northeastern.
UConn is ranked sixth in the preseason AP poll. The Huskies have been ranked in the AP poll for 546 consecutive weeks.
