STORRS, Conn. – The eighth-ranked UConn women's basketball team (10-2, 3-0 BIG EAST) closes out 2022 in Gampel Pavilion against Marquette (9-4, 2-2) on Saturday at 2 p.m. The game will air on SNY and the UConn Sports Network from Learfield (The River 105.9).
Junior Aaliyah Edwards and graduate student Dorka Juhász combined for 45 points and 38 rebounds to lead UConn past No. 21 Creighton, 72-47, on Wednesday. Edwards scored 23 points for her fourth-straight 20-point performance. She set a career high with 20 rebounds and became the first Husky since Maya Moore in 2010 with 20 rebounds in a game. Juhász notched a season-high 22 points and also set a career high with 18 rebounds.
UConn was without sophomore Amari DeBerry (travel issues), redshirt junior Aubrey Griffin (illness) and sophomore Azzi Fudd (injury) at Creighton. DeBerry will be available Saturday while Griffin and Fudd are beginning basketball activities and will return to game action soon.
Edwards has been stellar for the Huskies this season, especially as the team deals with injuries. The Kingston, Ontario, native is averaging 17.9 points and 10.0 rebounds per game this season and has scored 20+ points in the last four games.
UConn is 5-0 all-time vs. Marquette. The teams last met on Feb. 2, 2022, a 76-56 win for the Huskies. UConn trailed at halftime before rallying in the third quarter. The team was without head coach Geno Auriemma, who traveled with the team but didn't feel well enough to coach on the bench.
Marquette narrowly lost to Villanova, 54-52, on Wednesday. Jordan King led the Golden Eagles with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Villanova scored the game-winning layup with five seconds remaining in the game. This season, King leads the Golden Eagles with 15.3 points per game and is shooting 42.9 percent from three-point range. Chloe Marotta is averaging 13.3 points and a team-high 8.3 rebounds per game. Head coach Megan Duffy is in her fourth season at Marquette.
The Huskies will be back on the road next week at Butler on Tuesday, Jan. 3, and at Xavier on Thursday, Jan. 5.
