Softball secures BIG EAST regular season title for the first time since 1997

Storrs, CT – UConn wins in dramatic fashion to win the first game against Villanova and the BIG EAST regular season. This is the Huskies sixth walk off win of the season coming at a crucial time in the season.

Elise Sokolsky started in the circle for the Huskies. She went 6.1 innings and struck out ten.

The Wildcats took a 1-0 lead in the third inning. UConn responded right back in the bottom half of the third. Lexi Hastings got it started with a single up the middle to score Briana Marcelino to tie the game. Olivia Sappington gave the Huskies the lead with an infield single making it 2-1.

Villanova retook the lead in the fifth inning with a two run homer to make it 3-2.

Marybeth Olson came in relief for Sokolsky in the seventh.

The Huskies once again won on late game heroics, a trend for them all season. Jana Sanden delivered a big two run single to right field to give the Huskies the 4-3 win. That is Sanden's second walk-off hit of the season.

Head Coach Laura Valentino had this to say on her teams never say die attitude, "Fight is in our blood. Today's win was about everyone on this team and in this program. I can't wait to continue on this journey, one game at a time, with this team."

UConn will look to secure the series win tomorrow at 1:00pm.
