No. 4 Huskies to Face St. John’s Wednesday

STORRS, Conn. – The fourth-ranked UConn women's basketball team (13-2, 6-0 BIG EAST) returns to action at St. John's (14-1, 5-1) in the first women's basketball game at UBS Arena at 8 p.m. on Wednesday. The game will air on SNY and the UConn Sports Network (The River 105.9).
The Huskies beat Xavier, 73-37, last Thursday in Cincinnati. Redshirt junior Aubrey Griffin led the Huskies with 19 points in the game, including 11 on free throws. She added nine rebounds and three steals. Graduate student Dorka Juhász notched 18 points and grabbed 17 rebounds. She also had four blocks vs. the Musketeers.
The Huskies out-rebounded Xavier, 56-27. UConn notched 21 assists on 25 field goals, led by nine from the nation's assist leader Nika Mu¨hl.
UConn is 46-17 all-time vs. St. John's. Head coach Geno Auriemma is 46-8 vs. the Red Storm. The Huskies won both regular season matchups between the teams last season: a 75-57 victory at St. John's in Queens and a 93-38 win in Hartford on Feb. 25.
St. John's is coming off a 71-52 win over Xavier on Sunday. Jayla Everett led the team with 26 points in the game. This season, Everett leads St. John's with 17.3 points per game. The Red Storm started the season 13-0 and were ranked as high as No. 24 in the AP Poll. Head coach Joe Tartamella is in his 11th season at St. John's.
Head coach Geno Auriemma has missed four games for the Huskies this season while feeling unwell. There is currently no timetable for him to rejoin the team. In his absence, associate head coach Chris Dailey took over. Dailey, who has been on staff since Auriemma arrived in Storrs in 1985, has led the Huskies to a 17-0 record in Auriemma absences. Dailey has helped lead UConn to 11 NCAA Championships and was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2018.
UConn's game vs. DePaul originally scheduled for Sunday, Jan. 8, was rescheduled to Monday, Jan. 23. More details can be found HERE.
