SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – UConn women's basketball junior Nika Mühl was named one of 10 candidates for the 2023 Nancy Lieberman Award, as announced by the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association on Monday.
Now in its 24th year, the award recognizes the top point guard in women's NCAA Division I college basketball. To be considered for this prestigious award, candidates must exhibit the floor leadership, playmaking and ball-handling skills of Class of 1996 Hall-of-Famer Nancy Lieberman.
Mühl has stepped up at point guard as an upperclassman. She has dished out double-digit assists in nine games this season. No previous UConn player has had more than three double-digit assist games in one season.
The Zagreb, Croatia, native leads the nation with 8.8 assists per game and 184 total assists. UConn ranks second nationally with 20.6 assists per game.
Mühl set the UConn single-game record with 15 assists vs. NC State on Nov. 20. She also leads the Huskies with 32 steals.
In March, five finalists will be presented to Lieberman and the Hall of Fame's selection committee. The Selection Committee for the Nancy Lieberman Award is composed of top women's college basketball personnel including media members, head coaches, sports information directors and Hall of Famers.
Five Huskies have won the Nancy Lieberman Award a total of nine times: Sue Bird (2000, '01, '02), Diana Taurasi (2003, '04), Renee Montgomery (2009), Moriah Jefferson (2015, '16) and Paige Bueckers (2021).
