WASHINGTON – The University of Connecticut women's volleyball team fell to Georgetown on the road in four sets Saturday night. The Huskies were led by sophomore Emma Werkmeister with 13 kills, nine digs, and an assist.
The Huskies remain in search of breaking the losing streak that now gets extended to a seven-game skid. UConn moves to 5-13 overall and 0-6 in BIG EAST play. The Huskies looked strong in the beginning of the match with dominant offensive control in the first set but struggled to find a consistent serve as they faltered with 13 service errors.
In the first set, it was all UConn. The Huskies would go on a 10-0 scoring run to break away from the Hoyas in the middle of the set at 14-3. Ayro would get strong offensive chances as she tacked on six kills in the set. Georgetown couldn't gain any offensive control in the first as the Huskies rattled off a 25-12 first set win.
Then, the Hoyas would string together plays to turn the momentum away from UConn. After the 4-0 scoring run Georgetown went on, UConn couldn't find the answer in the second set. Although the Huskies fought back late in the set to stay within two points at 23-21 Georgetown, UConn would fall short in the set at 25-22 following eight kills for Ayro and seven for Werkmeister.
UConn again couldn't gain the ground it needed in the third set after managing multiple scoring runs by the Hoyas. The Hoyas had three scoring runs in the set to keep the momentum going in their favor. Junior Doga Kutlu would contribute 25 assists and 15 digs by the end of the third set, making that Kutlu's 11th double-double of the season. Ayro and Werkmeister also posted 10 kills each, as they worked to stay in the set. However, the Hoyas kept the lead and finished the set 25-19.
The Hoyas kept the momentum going in the fourth set as the Huskies continued to make up ground. Georgetown added on two scoring runs to stay at a confident pace behind the strong offensive play. UConn found its first lead in the set at 19-18 after being down by six points at 16-10. The Hoyas would continue to apply pressure offensively and shut down the Huskies offensive with their two of 11 total blocks on the night. The Hoyas finished the set 25-23 to close out the match.
