ATLANTA – UConn women's basketball redshirt junior Paige Bueckers and senior Aaliyah Edwards were selected to the Wade Watch list of candidates for the 2024 Wade Trophy, the Women's Basketball Coaches Association announced Thursday.
In its 47th year, the Wade Trophy is the oldest player of the year award in college women's basketball.
Bueckers returns to the court this month after missing the 2022-23 season. She was the first-ever freshman to be named AP Player of the Year in 2021 and was also the first freshman to win the Wooden Award, Naismith Trophy and USBWA Player of the Year.
Bueckers averaged 14.6 points, 4.0 rebounds and 3.9 assists per game in the 2021-22 season. She was also named the BIG EAST's Preseason Player of the Year, a preseason AP All-American and is on the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award watch list.
Edwards was the 2022-23 BIG EAST Most Improved Player and a selection to the 2022-23 All-BIG EAST First Team. She led UConn with 16.6 points per game and a career-high 9.0 rebounds per game last season. Edwards was also named an AP and USBWA Third Team All-American last year.
Edwards was a preseason honorable mention AP All-American and is on the preseason All-BIG EAST team and the Katrina McClain Award watch list.
The Wade Watch list of candidates for the Wade Trophy is composed of players selected by the WBCA NCAA Division I Awards Committee. The committee will review the list midseason to determine if additional players will be added based on their play during the first half of the 2023-24 season. The winner of the award will be announced in April during the 2024 WBCA Convention in Cleveland — site of the 2024 NCAA Women's Final Four.
UConn faces Southern Connecticut State in an exhibition on Saturday, Nov. 4, in Gampel Pavilion. The Huskies begin the 2023-24 regular season against Dayton on Wednesday, Nov. 8 in the XL Center.
