East Meadow, NY – The University of Connecticut swim and dive team made a competitive run at the Big East Championship, falling short of the repeating champions, Villanova. The win marks ten straight wins for the Wildcats, a team that held a moderate lead through all four days of competition. The Huskies earned the feat of runners-up after a few close finishes with Georgetown, falling just 21 points shy of the Hoyas after the second day of competition.
Several strong performances helped propel the Huskies forward Saturday. Julia Pioso received a gold for her 1-meter dives and got the Huskies off to a great start. Niamh Hofland set the tone for the swimmers and started the day with a 2nd place finish in the 1650-yard freestyle. This was followed soon by another 2nd place finish, this time coming from Robyn Edwards in the 200-yard backstroke. The Huskies would continue with positive placement throughout with Kayla Mendonca, Maggie Donlevy, Angela Gambardella, Kiera Liesinger, and Lexi Martino earning 3rd, 4th, 3rd, 5th, and 5th respectively.
In addition to race placements, the team also picked up a few individual accolades. First-year Husky Head Diving Coach David McKown was awarded the Big East Women's Dive Coach of the Year. Julia Pioso was recognized as the Big East Women's Most Outstanding Diver.
