STORRS, Conn. โ The UConn football team put the wraps on the 2023 spring practice schedule on Saturday by hosting a Spring Showcase event at Joseph J. Morrone Stadium on campus.ย The Huskies had 2,400 tickets distributed for Saturday's workout as fans got a chance to get an early look at this year's returners with a few newcomers sprinkled in.
UConn did not play a full scrimmage on Saturday, rather opting to focus on competitive situations โ redzone, goal line, short yardage, two-minute situations.ย Head Coach Jim Mora met the media prior to the showcase and assessed his team's spring performance as a whole.
"I think the quarterback competition has been really healthy and I think that has elevated everyone on our whole offensive team," stated Mora.ย "I think our passing game has really improved a ton.ย I think we are still running the ball well.ย We are much farther along than we ever were at this point last year.ย I'm excited."
One of the highlights on the defensive side came during the day's two-minute period as sophomore defensive back Alfred Chea (Jacksonville, Fla.) picked-off a pass and returned it for a score.ย A pair of freshmen hooked up for a score on offense as Brandon Zermeno (Los Angeles, Calif.) found Teddy Williams (Portland, Conn.) on a five-yard strike.
"We've had a tremendous offseason in my opinion.ย Our attitude has been outstanding, better than I have ever seen.ย Our commitment has been impressive to see.ย We tasted a little bit of what success tastes like last year and they want more of it.ย That has been demonstrated to me in everything they have done since we got back to campus in January."
