STORRS, Conn. - The BIG EAST Conference unanimously selected Maria Constantinou to All-BIG EAST First Team honors Wednesday afternoon.
"I am so proud of Maria's unanimous selection for First Team All-BIG EAST honors," Director of Tennis Glenn Marshall said. "She is one of only two players in the conference that were unanimously selected. Her spring season was outstanding, and she rose up in the lineup for the last month of the season to the number one position. There was no doubt she belonged at that position, as she had match clinching wins against UMass and Seton Hall."
In the 2023 season, Constantinou led the Huskies with an impressive individual record and doubles record. In singles, she moved up to the first singles spot on Mar. 26 against Boston University. She fell short in that match 7-5, 6-2. She then went on a 3-0 winning streak besting Sacred Heart, Villanova, and Georgetown; being awarded Women's BIG EAST Singles Player of the Week.
In the last match of the regular season, she clinched the match against UMass as UConn was looking for its first victory against the Minutewomen since 2015. She also clinched the match against Seton Hall in the BIG EAST Tournament First Round, finishing the season with an overall first singles record of 6-3.
Also, in doubles, she finished the 2023 season with the best doubles record for UConn finishing 11-9.
"Her fight and determination on the court was always on display in her matches. She was a great representative of UConn Athletics and our program, on and off the court all year. Her coaches and teammates are all so proud of what she accomplished."
