SEATTLE – UConn left-handed pitcher Andrew Sears was selected by the Detroit Tigers in the tenth round of the MLB Draft on Monday afternoon, going 290th overall.
Sears made 14 starts in his lone season in Storrs after transferring from Rhode Island College, holding the Friday role for the majority of the campaign. His UConn tenure was highlighted by two dominant performances against Georgetown amongst other strong outings. On 4/21, the southpaw took a perfect game into the seventh inning, registering 11 strikeouts in the Friday night win over the Hoyas. In what was ultimately his final appearance in a Huskies uniform on 5/26, he put the #HookC on his back with 8.0 shutout innings to advance to the Big East Tournament Championship.
His 74 strikeouts in 62.0 innings were tied for the team lead, along with four pickoffs courtesy of a move that flummoxed the opposition all year. The West Warwick, Rhode Island native became the 69th Husky to be selected in the Jim Penders era and the first of the 2023 Draft.
Rounds 11-20 begin at 2 p.m. ET on Tuesday, with multiple UConn players expecting to hear their names called over the course of the day.
