UConn Falls to Florida State at Classic City Clash

Athens, Ga. - The University of Connecticut women's volleyball team dropped the last match of the Classic City Clash against Florida State in three sets Sunday afternoon.Â
After a thrilling fifth set victory for the Huskies Saturday afternoon, Florida State would challenge UConn from the beginning of the match this afternoon. Coming away from the opening weekend of the 2023 season, UConn stands at 1-2 overall.Â
Florida State would get going with a 4-0 scoring run early in the first set and it would continue to pull ahead with another scoring run going up 12-8. UConn then would take a timeout at 13-8. Even with the Huskies regrouping out of the timeout, the Seminoles would run away with the first set to make it 25-15. Â
With Jess Perry up to 5 kills at the UConn timeout trailing 10-7 in the second set, Florida State's Khori Louis would compete with Perry putting up her eighth kill. Also helping Florida State was Audrey Koenig, as Koenig would not be too far behind with 6 kills. The Seminoles would go on another scoring run to make it 19-12. For UConn, Perry teamed with Emma Werkmeister on the offense as they each finished with seven kills at the end of the set. However, with the powerful offensive force from Florida State, UConn would drop the second set, 25-18. Â
Doga Kutlu making it to 13 assists would start off the Huskies with some momentum, but the offense could not match the aggression from Louis as she dialed in the 10th kill early in the third set. The Seminoles would go on a 3-0 scoring run to force UConn to take a timeout, trailing 11-9. Perry came out of the timeout with her eighth kill of the day. However, Florida State would continue to pour on the pressure. The Huskies would take a timeout at 17-13 with a 3-0 scoring run for the Seminoles. Florida St. would extend the run to 5-0 late in the third set. Even with Werkmeister's game-high 12 kills and Kutlu's 19 assists, it wouldn't be enough as Louis and Audrey Rothman combined for 19 kills, 11 digs, and five blocks. The Seminoles took the third set, 25-20.Â
